The Climbing Tree
Jacqueline Venus
From a quick sketch of a tree in my daughter's backyard, I set myself a challenge...work only in black and white, to produce texture, shadow, shape and form. I used a piece of white cotton, and hand stitched using only machine cotton thread. Only two stitches were used, stem and seed.
Jacobean Tulip
Adele Blennerhassett Corke
In this Goldwork class, traditional techniques including padding and couching were explored. Using piece beading and nontraditional materials including sequin waste, found objects were incorporated for a new twist. The background is velvet.
A Little Bird Told Me
Susan Hickey
This piece is from a workshop by Mary Veenman focusing on free motion machine embroidery on small pieces of fabric. Applique was also used in the section with the owl.
Into the Wild Woods
Pat Broome
Using hand dyed fabric as a base, multiple fibres, silk ribbons and beads were used to embellish the fabric. The flow of the fabric influenced which filling/embellishment stitches were used.
Elizabeth Bell
I learned this process in an "Embroidery on Paper" class taught by Hazel Wilmott. Following a pattern, holes are punched into light cardstock and then following a sequence of numbers the stitching begins. I find this is a lovely way to make greeting cards. This particularly piece is stitched using a metallic thread.
Wisdom in the Wood
Linde Echinger
This was my design for Alix Jordan's Introduction to basic embroidery class, taken my first year with CEG. As we covered each stitch, it was incorporated into the piece, starting with the owl and ending with the roses on the trellis.
Honu, the sea turtle
Beth Sims
I was inspired when attending Sue Carlson's summer workshop. Sue layers fabric in her art work and I wanted to combine that process with my love for buttons and beads. I then attended Kay Sweetman's button class and immediately linked the two processes.
Sharon Whatford
This wallhanging was inspired by the quilts and embroidery techniques of Japan. It was machine pieced, appliqued, quilted and embroidered all by hand.
Soldier's Sewing Kit
Mary Downs
This little roll up sewing kit features vintage fabric, a vintage button for closure, and vintage sewing accessories. Inspired by the legendary "Housewife", the compact case carried by Canadian WW1 soldiers providing necessary sewing necessities...thread, darning yarn, needles, thimble, buttons etc. Class was taught by Beve Jeffery.
